Bhutan, a fiercely independent kingdom lies on the roof of the world with only about 600,000 people. . The name Bhutan has been derived from “Bhotanta” which means the end of land of the Bhots, and from the Sanskrit word Bhu’uttan or highland. It lies east of Nepal and west of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. Bhutan is a land-locked country surrounded by mountains in north and west. Located in the heart of the high Himalayan mountain range, the rugged east, visited by few Western travelers, separates the kingdom from Tibet.

Towards the end of February (Bhutanese New Year, Lhosar) is celebrated. At the height of spring, the end of March, the whole kingdom comes to life with the flame of red, pink and white Rhododendron blossom. The traveller encounters the full glory of this ancient land through its strategic monastic fortresses known as Dzongs, numerous ancient temples, monasteries and stupas which point the countryside, prayer flags which flutter along the high ridges, wild animals abundant in the dense forest, foamy white water falls acting as  the real showers, and warm smiles of friendly people.

Bhutan has a rich primate life, with rare species such as the golden langurand Macacamunzala. The Bengal tiger, clouded leopard, hispid hare, the sloth bear, grey langur, tiger, goral and serow are found in mixed conifer, broadleaf and pine forests. Fruit-bearing trees and bamboo provide habitat for the Himalayan black bear, red panda, squirrel, sambar, wild pig and barking deer. The alpine habitats of the great Himalayan range in the north are home to the snow leopard, blue sheep, marmot, Tibetan wolf, antelope, Himalayan musk deer and the takin, Bhutan’s national animal. More than 5,400 species of plants and more than 770 species of birds are found in Bhutan.

Isolated from the rest of the world until the mid-20th century, one can even enjoy rich and unique cultural heritage that has largely remained intact. Bhutanese tradition is deeply steeped in its Buddhist heritage.People in the southern region follow Hinduism as the second most dominant religion. Bhutan has been referred to as The Last Shangri-La due to its largely unspoiled natural environment and cultural heritage. Each moment becomes special as one travel throughout the country.
